For the Cheese Topping
  • 2 cups Mozzarella Cheese Mixing in provolone adds extra taste
  • 1 cup Parmesan Cheese Pecorino Romano is an excellent substitute
For the Garnish
  • 1/4 cup Fresh Basil Dried basil can be used if fresh isn't available

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • medium mixing bowl
  • Large skillet
  • Large baking dish

Method

Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. Begin by bringing a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Add the ziti pasta and cook until just al dente, about 8–10 minutes. Drain the pasta and set it aside in a large bowl, allowing it to cool slightly while you prepare the filling.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, sour cream, one beaten egg, minced garlic, and fresh basil. Stir until well incorporated and creamy.
  3. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef and cook until fully browned, about 5–7 minutes. Drain excess fat, then stir in marinara sauce and simmer until heated through.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large baking dish, start by spreading half of the cooked ziti as the base layer. Follow with half of the meat sauce and half of the cheese filling. Repeat with the remaining ziti, sauce, and cheese mixture.
  5. Sprinkle mozzarella and Parmesan cheese evenly over the top of the assembled layers.
  6. Carefully place the baking dish in your preheated oven. Bake for 35 minutes, or until cheese is bubbling and golden brown.
  7. Once baked, remove from oven and allow to cool for about 5–10 minutes before serving. Garnish with additional fresh basil if desired.
