Ingredients

For the Crust
  • 1 cup Unsalted Butter Provides rich flavor for the crust; substitute with salted butter, reducing added salt.
  • 0.5 cup Granulated Sugar Adds sweetness; consider using a sugar substitute like stevia or erythritol for a lower-calorie option.
  • 2.25 cups All-Purpose Flour Creates structure; use a gluten-free flour blend for a gluten-free version.
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder Provides leavening to the crust.
For the Custard Filling
  • 8 ounces Full-Fat Cream Cheese Ensures creaminess; reduced-fat is acceptable, but avoid nonfat as it won't set properly.
  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar
  • 3 Eggs Essential for binding and structure in both custard and cream cheese layers.
  • 1 cup Whole Milk Adds creaminess and moisture to the custard layer.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract Enhances flavors in both the cream cheese and custard layers.
  • 0.25 teaspoon Salt

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • hand mixer

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9x13-inch baking pan by greasing it with butter or cooking spray and lightly dusting it with flour.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, cream together softened unsalted butter and 1/2 cup of granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3–5 minutes.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 1/4 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 teaspoon of baking powder, then gradually add this mixture to the creamed butter and sugar until crumbly.
  4. Press half of the crumbly dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan.
  5. In a clean mixing bowl, beat together 8 ounces of cream cheese, 1/2 cup of sugar, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 1 egg until smooth.
  6. Spread the cream cheese filling evenly over the crust in the baking pan.
  7. Whisk together 3 eggs, 1 cup of whole milk, 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1/4 cup of sugar until smooth, then pour over the cream cheese layer.
  8. Crumble the remaining dough over the custard layer evenly.
  9. Bake for 50–60 minutes until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  10. Allow to cool on a wire rack for at least one hour, then refrigerate for a minimum of 2 hours before serving.
  11. Cut into squares and dust with powdered sugar just before serving.
