Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef for 7-10 minutes. Drain excess fat.
  3. Add chopped onion to the skillet and sauté for 3-4 minutes until translucent. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  4. Thinly slice the potatoes and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter. Layer half the potatoes in the dish.
  5. Spread the beef-onion mixture over the potato layer, then top with remaining potato slices.
  6. Whisk together milk and melted butter in a bowl. Pour over the layered casserole.
  7. Sprinkle shredded cheese generously over the top.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until cheese is golden.
