- In a large pot, add 8 cups of water or chicken broth and bring it to a boil over high heat.
 - Once boiling, add the chopped carrots, green beans, corn, barley, onions, and potatoes.
 - Sprinkle salt, pepper, thyme, and bay leaves into the pot.
 - Add the diced beef into the mixture and let it simmer uncovered for about 55 minutes.
 - Taste and adjust seasoning, then remove bay leaves before serving.
